Labour Day
Our first day on the job turned out to be a holiday. May 1st is a public holiday in Malawi - Labour Day. We did visit the job site and took a tour of the village and got oriented on what to expect.
After lunch we went to the Lilongwe City Centre and the Old Town market. There are throngs of people at the Old Town market and you can buy anything from fabric to dried fish. There are no price tags, all prices are negotiated. It was quite interesting, some people are good (JR) at negotiation, and some people aren't (Bob). Unfortunately, cameras aren't welcome in this area and for safety reasons we left them at home.
The biggest eye opener was on the way into City Centre we passed by a row of coffin manufactures. There were about 7 or eight roadside shops that produced coffins 24 hours a day. This was a harsh reminder of why we are here. Some stats say that AIDS is responsible for 10 deaths per hour in Malawi, the average life expectancy is now 28 years old and dropping and that 1 in every 5 people are HIV positive. That is 240 people dying of AIDS per day. Numbers like that make coffin builders very busy people.

That sounds like quite an eye opener, thank you for sharing with us. It makes you really appreciate life in Canada doesn't it?
Sleep well and good luck for your first day on the job tomorrow.
Love/miss you very much Dale, Andrea

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace."
Have a great day!

Hey Bob!!!
Have u adopted any of those kids over there. We called Canada Customs to make sure your luggage isn't overweight on your return trip. Bo will be incarcerated at the vet's until Friday, as the vet said they don't want ur cat to jump or lick it's wounds. Your Mom decided to play it safe, and I think it is a good idea, condidering how much bo bounces. I had an intersesting delivery today. Everyone had gone home at my last drop and they forgot to lock the door. I opened the door and the alarm system beeped to ask me to activate my code. 10 seconds later the alarm was screaming. I decided not to stick around and answer questions so I amscrayed. CHow for now,
Daniel

I have shown you in every way by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.
